Privacy
We are using plain language on purpose so you can easily read and understand our intent and promise. We are still starting out and will update with deeper legal review when ready.
The short version: What you write here is yours. We do not sell it, we do not show ads against it, we do not put trackers on your browser, and no person reads your private words in the normal course of running this product. We collect the minimum we need to make your coach work and to see whether the product is helping, and you can take your data with you or delete all of it whenever you want.
What we collect
Your account. Your name, what you would like to be called, your email address, and a password that we never see in readable form. We ask your birth year and month once, only to confirm you are an adult, because Compass & Canvas is built for adults. We ask for your location so we can direct you to more specific resources when appropriate, and to confirm that Compass & Canvas is available where you are. For now, that is the United States, Canada, and Australia. Your timezone is picked up from your browser so reminders arrive at sensible hours. During this invite-only early period, we also keep the invite code you used and your short note on how you know me, so we know who is in this small first group and can make sense of your feedback.
Your work. Your answers, reflections, journal entries, conversations with your coach, your compass statement, your plans, and your check-ins. This is the heart of the product and it belongs to you.
Your voice. If you answer by speaking, we transcribe the recording and then permanently delete the audio. We keep the words, not your voice.
How the product is used. We record basic first-party usage events, such as which screens are visited and where people stop, so we can see where the product works and where it loses people. This stays in our own database. There are no third-party analytics scripts, no advertising pixels, and no trackers on this site or in the product.
What we never do
We never sell your data. We never share it with advertisers or data brokers. We never use your words to market to you. We never put tracking scripts on your browser. We never train anyone's AI on your direct words.
Who can see your words
Running this product means seeing usage numbers and summaries, not your journal and not your conversations. Your private words are read by a human only in three narrow cases: when you ask for help with a problem and the fix requires looking at your account, when there is a genuine concern about immediate safety, yours or someone else's, or when the law requires it. In that last case, where the law allows it, we will tell you before we hand over anything. Every one of those accesses is logged with its reason, and we would rather tell you it happened than pretend it cannot. The emails and reminders we send never contain your private words either, because inboxes and lock screens are not private places, with one exception you turn on yourself: if you set a plan and then drift away, the reminder you asked for can include the plan you agreed to, and you can switch that off in Settings.
Your feedback is different from your words
Two places in the product are built for telling us things, and we do read those: the quick rating you can give any coach response, and the note you can add when a response misses. Both say so where they appear. If something goes wrong in a conversation, you will also be able to share that specific conversation with us, on purpose, with a button; nothing is shared unless you press it.
How your coach works
Your coach is powered by an AI model from a commercial provider. To respond to you, the things you have shared are sent to that provider and processed to generate your coach's reply. Under our agreement, the provider does not use your content to train its models. We keep a record of what the coach says to you, along with its cost and safety checks, because we test the coach constantly and hold it to written standards. One honest limit: to coach you, your words pass through our AI provider, and a copy can persist in their systems on their own schedule, not ours, and longer if their safety systems flag it. It is the one place our delete does not extend, and we would rather say so than let you assume otherwise.
Safety, honestly
Your coach is a coach, not a therapist, and it will say so at the moments that matter. If you share something that suggests you may be in danger, the product will point you to real help, and we keep a minimal internal note that a safety moment occurred and where in the product it happened. We do not log the content of what you said in that note. Compass & Canvas is not a crisis service and no one is monitoring your messages in real time.
Where your data lives
Your data is stored with established cloud providers in the United States, encrypted in transit and at rest, behind access rules that are enforced at the database level, not just in the application.
Your controls
You can export everything you have written, in a readable format, whenever you want. You can delete your account yourself, from Settings, without writing to anyone. When you do, your account closes immediately and your data becomes inaccessible, and you have 30 days to change your mind: sign back in within 30 days and everything is exactly as you left it. After 30 days, your words, your history, and your account are permanently removed from our systems, with copies in our backups aging out shortly after. This cannot be undone, and no one will email you to talk you out of it. While you are a member, your data is kept so your coach can remember you; that is the product working as promised, not a retention policy hiding in fine print.
If you stop paying
Right now, while we are just starting out, Compass & Canvas is free. We will explore a pricing model later, and if we do, here is what will apply. Your words are not hostage to a subscription. If your membership ends, your account becomes free and read-only: everything you made stays yours to revisit and download, active coaching pauses, and every promise on this page keeps applying. If you come back, your coach remembers you and the map is where you left it. Deleting your data is only ever something you choose, never something that happens to you because a payment failed. The one exception is long abandonment: if an account is not signed into at all for 24 months, we will email you warnings and then delete it, because intimate words should not sit forgotten in someone's database forever.
The people who help us run this
A small number of service providers process data on our behalf: our hosting and database providers, our AI provider, an error-monitoring service that helps us fix crashes, and an email service for the messages you have asked for. Each receives only what its job requires, and none of them may use your data for their own purposes. When paid memberships arrive, payments will be handled by a dedicated payment processor, and your card details will never touch our systems.
If something ever goes wrong
If we ever suffer a breach that touches your data, we will tell you promptly and plainly: what happened, what was affected, and what we are doing about it. No burying it in a settings page, no waiting until it is convenient.
Who this is for
Compass & Canvas is for people 18 and over. If a signup tells us someone is under 18, we do not create the account and we do not keep their information. If we ever learn that an existing account belongs to someone under 18, we close it and delete its data on our normal deletion path, without the 30-day change-of-mind window that applies when you close your own account.
If this product ever closes or changes hands
Two promises about endings. If Compass & Canvas ever shuts down, you will get at least 90 days of notice, your export will work the entire time, and then everything will be deleted. If it is ever sold, your data does not get sold out from under these promises: any new owner must agree in writing to honor this page as it stands, you will be told before any transfer happens, and you will have time to export your words or delete your account first. Changes a new owner might want to make can only apply going forward, never to what you have already written here.
When this page changes
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page and email you before the change applies to you. The promises in the short version at the top are the ones we consider permanent.
